Anything inspired by Alice in Wonderland, I’m all for it. So when I saw that How Do You Do in North Shields served Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea I had to give it a try, so my friend Beth and I booked a table in half term.
We arrived a little late and were shown straight to our table which had great views overlooking the Fish Quay. Our drinks were served – tea for me and coffee for Beth – while we waited for our afternoon tea to be brought out. Although my teapot looked fab, it was fairly heavy so I ended up pouring it everywhere except my cup. Pretty but not practical.
The sandwiches were cream cheese and cucumber, and ham and pease pudding. If these aren’t up your street then there are different options when you book. As I’ve said before, I don’t have a very big appetite so the quantity was perfect for me.
We had a choice of scones of which we chose the cherry. It came with jam and chantilly cream. Hands down the nicest scones I’ve tasted.
Next up came the most fun part – all the Mad Hatter inspired cakes and drink. Victoria sponge reminiscent of the Queen of Hearts, pink rose water flapjacks, mini strawberry Eton mess, chocolate brownies that look like plant pots, multi-coloured lollipops and mini bottles of stawberry lemonade which were absolutely delicious.
The views, the quirkiness, and the delicious desserts all contribute to a lovely couple of hours at How Do You Do. As we were leaving we had a look at the regular menu and decided we should definitely go back for food. I also can’t wait for a summer night to drink cocktails here, too.
