A couple of weeks I was lucky enough to visit a handful of restaurants in Sunderland in anticipation of Sunderland Restaurant Week. Another group of bloggers were taken to 808 Bar & Kitchen, and after seeing their Instastories and posts I knew I had to visit. Last Saturday myself and Beth took ourselves over to Sunderland for food and cocktails.
It was around 2pm when we arrived at 808, and although it was fairly busy we were given a table straight away. The interior is so impressive, with lots of cherry blossoms, gorgeous teal green seating, and faux greenery. Let’s be honest, an Instagram dream – and that’s before we even got to the millennial pink bathroom!
The cocktail menu is small for perfectly formed. I decided to go for a classic mojito, while Beth went for the Bramble. I wish I’d added one of the different flavours to mine as it was a little bland, to be honest, but Beth’s was so good!
For starters, I ordered the garlic mushrooms and Beth the potato wedges with garlic mayo. My garlic mushrooms were served on brioche with a small side salad. I expected them to be in a creamier garlic sauce, but they were OK. Beth’s garlic mayo, on the other hand, was amazing. So much so that we ordered a portion to dip our fries in with our mains. This is a big statement, but it may be the best garlic mayo I’ve ever tasted.
For the main event, Beth chose the Smookeydoohah pizza, and I the Fat Bob’s OG Burger. My burger was definitely a good ‘un. A classic cheese burger with a just-the-right-size beef patty and all the trimming, including some crispy bacon. I opted for sweet potato fries and they were delicious.
Beth hadn’t expected her pizza to be quite as spicy as it was (she isn’t one for anything with a lot of heat), but she powered through the burning sensation in her mouth and the runny nose finishing the whole pizza. Oh, and you can choose between three different sizes of pizza, which is great as I can never finish off a whole pizza on my own in a restaurant. Her opinion? Even though it was a touch too spicy for her, she really enjoyed it.
The toilets at 808 Bar & Kitchen are the icing on the cake. Pink tiles, gold basins, and marble tops. Why can’t my bathroom look this good!? I obviously had to take a selfie in there, as I’m sure almost every girl who visits will. It just too tempting!
As for the customer service, it was great. Fast and efficient – I accidentally left my camera on my seat when we left (well we were actually in the bathroom) and one of the girls ran after me to find it! If that’s not great customer service then I don’t know what is.
Do you fancy visiting 808? I’d like to go back to sample more of their cocktail menu.
