I’ve got a secret. I don’t actually like ice cream. Shock horror, I know. I’d choose a Twister ice lolly over ice cream any day of the week. With Scoop & Bean in South Shields being famous for their various flavours of ice cream, I almost felt guilty for not shunning them. What I got instead was equally as delicious. Well, more so in my opinion!
You’re absolutely spoilt for choice when you arrive at Scoop & Bean. It took us a good five minutes (if not more) to decide what we were having. When it comes to ice cream there’s anything from traditional vanilla, strawberry and mint choc chip to flavours such as banana and caramel, cookie monster and even Irn Brew! There are fruity flavours such as cherry mania and raspberry sorbet, too. Alongside straight up ice cream cones or tubs, there’s also sundaes and milkshakes. I was debating trying a toffee crunch sundae, but as it was freezing outside I decided to pass on the frozen options and go with a hot drink instead.
Alongside tea and coffee on the hot drinks menu, you can grab a hot chocolate, which is what I went for. There’s the option to have your hot choccie with cream, marshmallows and a flake, or cream, fudge pieces, and a flake. I went for the marshmallows. The chocolate wasn’t too sickly but tasted like a proper hot chocolate. Not the powdered kind you mix up with water at home that’s just a bit naff. I’m not saying it’s the best hot chocolate in the North East (you’d have to ask Chloe that), but it hit the spot on that chilly Sunday.
As I was paying I spotted the selection of cakes out of the corner of my eye and decided to treat myself to a Jammy Dodger Blondie. Have you ever had a blondie? They’re like brownies but without the chocolate. I much prefer them, and what’s more, it was warm! I felt like I’d hit the jackpot. The warm, soft, gooey blondie perfectly complimented the slightly crunchy Jammy Dodgers on the top. I’m almost drooling thinking about it, I could easily go and eat one right now. The perfect companion to my marshmallow laden hot chocolate.
If I remember correctly it was the last Sunday of October half term that we visited Scoop & Bean, and it was fairly busy. It’s located right next to Ocean Beach in South Shields, so prime location for families. We still managed to find a seat, though. I can imagine in the summer it will be jam-packed, and you’ll be lucky to grab a seat then. But then again, I’m sure at that time of year grabbing an ice cream and hitting the beach would be more desirable over a got drink couped up inside.
If you’re after more than just ice cream, definitely head to Scoop & Bean in South Shields. I’d highly recommend a walk along the seafront while you’re there, too.
