I’ve never been one to shy away from a bold print or two. When I was younger I’d pair leopard print with red or a floral print with bright yellow shoes. Not very chic, I know. Now that my style has matured and I know what suits, I tend to dress a little more conservative. If you can call head-to-toe leopard print conservation. Here are my top tips for wearing bold prints.
Pair with Minimal Accessories
If you’re going bold with the print you’re wearing, stick with minimal accessories. No bright headbands, no statement shoes, and definitely no coloured bags, either. A simple pair of gold hoops and perhaps a gold chain, are all you need to accessorise your bold print.
Wear with Neutral Tones
The classiest style of animal print is a neutral one. No bright pink or neon yellow leopard, thanks. It may look good at a rave, but it’ll never appear in my wardrobe. Classy, not tacky, is the look we’re going for. Most leopard prints have a cream, tan or brown base layer with black spots. This means any neutral tone will look great. For this outfit, I’ve paired my black leather boots and a taupe bag. If you’re going to wear a coat or jacket, make that neutral, too. A black suede biker jacket would be my choice.
Depending on the print, black, white or tan are will generally look great. Warmer tones such as reds, oranges, and pinks look good with cream or tan, while cooler tones such as blue or green will go well with black and white. Remember, when you’re wearing bold prints, the rest of your outfit should be a blank canvas for your statement piece to stand out.
Inject Colour with your Lipstick
If like me, you do like some colour in your outfit, a classic red lipstick always looks good with leopard print. Depending on your choice of print, a fuschia or orange lippie would look fabulous. My choice was an orange-red shade.
What is your go-to bold print? Clearly, animal print is mine!
