A few nights ago I headed out with my Mam to sample The Botanist Newcastle New Menu Launch. The Botanist opened it’s doors in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne almost five years ago this winter. Last Wednesday I attended the Hawthorns terrace party at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Newcastle. I’d heard lots about this hotel but I’d never actually visited before, so I was super excited.
I arrived a little early, but luckily bumped into Chloe from New Girl in Toon outside so we headed in together where we were greeted with a cocktail and a profesh-looking name badge. Swanky.
We decided to stay inside for a little while as it was so hot outside. There was a guy playing acoustic guitar which I was particularly enjoying.
After a few minutes we headed outside to enjoy some of the sunshine along with Melissa from The Girl and the Treadmil; Mandy Charlton; Pixie from Fashion Voyeur; Rachel from Life in Geordieland and Ashleigh from Ashleigh Money Saver. Nyomi from Nomipalony popped along a little later, too.
There were some yummy canapes handed around, I particularly enjoyed the savoury profiteroles, which were filled with cream cheese – so delicious.
After some speeches from the hotel manager and head chef we were invited to head off and sample some of the food on offer. There was everything from a BBQ, sea food from Craster and Seahouses, meats from Turnbulls of Alnwick, a huge selection of cheeses from the Northumberland Cheese Co, breads from Geordie Bakers and drinks from Fentimans.
After grabbing a cocktail made with Fentimans, we all got ourselves a table and tried to decided where to start first. I headed outside and chose some spit roasted Northumberland lamb and the most delicious slaw I’ve ever tasted. I meant to try some seafood, but I only had a scallop – which I’d never tried before – but it wasn’t really for me. I have this thing with the texture of certain foods, such as tomatoes and prawns. Scallops unfortunately fall into this category for me. After sampling another Fentimans cocktail, I headed over to the deserts and had some honey flavoured ice cream from Doddington’s Dairy, which was so good!
All in all I had a fab evening with some lovely people. I definitely go back back to Hawthorns for food again as it all delicious.
A couple of weeks ago, on my birthday, my bestie and I decided to treat ourselves to a date night at Sea & Soil, Amble. The restaurant has been open for a few years now, but we just hadn’t gotten around to trying it out, so as a birthday treat we decided to (eventually) eat out at Sea & Soil.
When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was that there was only us and one other customer in the restaurant. The atmosphere was very friendly and cosy though, not uncomfortable at all. I loved the rustic décor and lighting. We sat by the window, which was great for people watching. The playlist was fab, too – Tom Odel, James Bay and Jason Mraz all added to the relaxed vibe Sea & Soil have going on.
Leanne decided to have a starter, Goats Cheese Panna Cota with Sweet & Sour Tomatoes. There wasn’t really anything that caught my attention on the starter menu, so I decided to save myself for the main course.
As for main courses, we both went for burgers. The Chef for me (with bacon, mature chedder cheese, boozed onions and fried eggs), while Leanne went for The Mexican (with nachos, salsa, and chedder). I chose sweet potato fries with my burger, which were amazing!
The burger was huge though, I only managed to eat around half of it but I enjoyed every single bite of it! I do prefer burgers that aren’t big and thick, but I made an exception for this one!
I didn’t think I could manage after the delicious burger, but seeing the Peanut Butter Cheesecake on the specials menu, I just couldn’t leave without tasting it. As expected, it was amazing! I’d go back just for a cuppa and the cheesecake to be honest.
Leanne and I have decided we’d like to go back and have brunch at some point, as that menu sounded yummy, too.
If you’re in the area and looking for somewhere to eat, I’d highly recommend Sea & Soil.
I first discovered Five Guys in Covent Garden, London about two or three years ago. Since then any chance I’ve had to have a Five Guys burger I’ve been all over it. I was so excited when I found out there was a branch opening in the Metrocentre, it’s felt like such a long wait!
The first chance I got, I made sure I paid Five Guys, Metrocentre a visit. I opted for the Bacon CheeseBurger and chose lettuce, grilled mushrooms, onions, mayo and BBQ sauce on the top. The toppings are free and you can choose as many as you fancy.
I didn’t buy any fries as I find you get far too many for one person, but if you were sharing between two or even three people I’d recommend getting only one medium sized portion.
Now comes the fun part. If you buy a regular drink you get unlimited top ups from the drinks machine. There’s anything from standard Coke-a-Cola to various different flavoured Fanta’s. I went for a Cherry Coke first and a Peach Fanta second. I’ll give you a tip. If you want to try a few different flavours, don’t fill up your cup. I only fill mine about half so that if I don’t like the flavour I haven’t got a whole cup of it that I have to drink before I go and try another flavour.
So, back to the burger. What is it that makes this the best burger in Toon I hear you say? It’s personal preference, but I just don’t like huge, thick burgers. They’re too much for me and I end up leaving half of them as I’ll get too full. A Five Guys burger, however, comprises of two thinner burgers. This makes it much easier to actually eat. The bacon is so good on the burger, nice and crispy. I hate fatty bacon, so crispy is the way forward for me. The whole burger is just so yummy and juicy, absolutely delicious.
